Chapter 24

Maya walked into the kitchen where Michael stood at the counter. She was curious about where he’d been earlier, but she didn’t come right out and ask. He didn’t want to lie, so he simply said, “I needed to get some information and pick up a few things.” When he whipped out his new cell phone, the orchids he’d picked up from Flowers Unlimited, and a basket from Soul Vegetarian packed to the brim with something that smelled absolutely awesome, she left it at that.

She glanced at the notebook on the counter, then to the open telephone directory, before placing one hand on her hip. “How is it that we go to sleep at the same time, and you wake up before I do?”

At times he wondered the same thing.. “I normally sleep late into the afternoon since all my concerts are at night. But my whole schedule’s been turned around since I’ve been here.” He flipped the page. “I use the time while you’re sleeping to focus, meditate, and create new music.”

His smile widened, still thumbing through the telephone book he asked, “How fast can you be ready to go?”

“Go where?” Maya perked up, trying to take a peek. He blocked her view, snapping the book closed.

“And your answer is …?”

“What have you been up to?” she asked, eyes narrowing with suspicion.

“I’m not telling,” he said, sticking out his tongue. “You have twenty minutes to get dressed, so I wouldn’t waste time. I know how women are when it comes to that.”

She turned to leave the kitchen, then stopped cold as though realizing that he’d made a subtle jab at all women—including her. Her eyes fell to Michael’s lips, because his tongue slowly moistened them, an unconscious move, but her reaction made him aware of what he had done.

Maya backed up, scurrying out of the room.

If he didn’t know better, he’d swear that Maya wanted to plant one on him. The thought brought a rise down below. He hadn’t been so horny in a long time.

Michael looked just below waist level. “Down, boy. Down.”
